Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai is one of the busiest railway stations in India where thousands of local people come everyday to board train to reach their destinations. This railway station is most commonly known to the local people by its abbreviation CST or VT.

Here is an overview of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai.

The structure of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai was built in the year of 1888 in the Victorian Gothic style. Its structure is a fine combination of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture with the traditional Indian architecture. There is a history behind its name. It took ten years to be built and was originally named as Victoria Terminals. But in response to the demand of renaming locations with Indian names and especially by the demand of Shiv Sena, and was changed from 'Victoria Terminals' to 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus'.

Although it may sound surprising but Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai is also considered as one of the important tourist attractions, because its awe inspiring building looks much more than a railway station and is reflective of the Victorian era. It is resplendent in spectacular sculptures and arcades. At the highest point of the building, on the dome, stands the inspirational statue of Progress.

One interesting fact about this railway station is that India's first steam engine left from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in 1887 after it was completed. At present a huge number of trains leave from this station every day, carrying around 2.5 million commuters to and from this city.

With its neoclassical sculptures, exquisite stone carvings, the central dome and the overall structure of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai makes it worth visiting as a tourist spot.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai was nominated as a World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO on July 2, 2004.
