Elephanta Caves in Mumbai

The Elephanta Caves in Mumbai on Gharapuri Island in the city's harbor and an hour's boat ride from the Gateway of India. It is a major tourist attraction in Mumbai and is visited by a large number of tourists every year. The Elephanta caves in Mumbai are made out of solid rock which dates back to 600 AD. The Elephanta Cave complex spreads over an area of approximately 60000 square feet and constitutes courtyards, shrines, inner cells, impressive halls and porticos filled with fine stone sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The Elephanta Caves in Mumbai reverberates with the spiritual energy of India.

Located at the entrance to the caves is the renowned Trimurti, the trinity of Elephanta- Lord Brahma the creator, Lord Vishnu, the preserver and Lord Shiva the destroyer. One of the most outstanding features of the Elephanta Cave is the 6m high Maheshmurti, which is a three headed bust of lord Siva portraying his three facets that of creator, destroyer and protector.

In addition the Elephanta Cave also comprises of a series of nine massive sculptured panels depicting different incidents in lord Siva life and other remarkable instances from the Hindu mythology. Several sculptures within the Elephanta Caves in Mumbai have been damaged by Portuguese rulers but the place has not failed to attract visitors with its sublime beauty.
