Flora Fountain in Mumbai

The Flora Fountain in Mumbai is situated in the heart of the city's Fort Business District on M.G. Road which is one of the busiest areas. The Flora Fountain is an ornately sculpted stone fountain which was created as a memorial of one of early governors of Mumbai named Sir Bartle Frere. The Flora Fountain in Mumbai was built in the year 1864 and was designed by R. Norman Shaw and sculpted by James Forsythe. Today it is a heritage structure and one of the many tourist attractions in Mumbai.

The Flora Fountain in Mumbai stands precisely at the point where the original Church Gate of Bombay Fort stood. The square in which the fountain is located in called the Hutatma Chowk. The Fountain was supposedly named after Flora, the Roman Goddess of Abundance and is a beautiful white marble structure with a fountain. It was originally built of Portland Stone but now it wears a coat of white oil paint. If you ever come to Mumbai, pay a visit to Fort District to watch the beautiful Flora Fountain.

The area around Mumbai's Flora Fountain is known as the Fountain area or Fort area and is surrounded by several offices, banks, colleges and shops. In the Fort area you will also find many Victorian buildings. Located here are the University of Mumbai building with its splendid Rajahbai tower, Old Secretariat, Mumbai High Court, and the Institute of Science. Other places of interest close to the Flora Fountain area include the Asiatic Society of Bombay, St. Thomas Cathedral, General Post Office and the Thomas Cook Building. The Bombay Stock Exchange is also located at a short distance to the Fort Area.

As a heritage structure, the Flora Fountain in Mumbai attracts much tourist attention and visitors are seen admiring the fountain as they pass by. Getting to this place is quite convenient as it is accessible through local cabs, trains, and auto rickshaws. People coming to see the Flora Fountain in Mumbai also indulge in shopping as the area consists of many markets and shopping complexes.
