Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai

The Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai is situated at the seashore on the northern side of Malabar hills, and is one of the most sacred temples in the city. The Mahalaxmi Temple was built around the year 1785 to appease the goddess of wealth, Laxmi. There is an old legend associated with the building of the Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai. Worshipers and devotees come from all over India to pay their respects at the temple. As one of holiest places, this temple is a popular tourist attraction in Mumbai.

Inside the Mahalaxmi Temple are the shrines of the Hindu deities of Mahalakshmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswathi. Mumbai's Mahalaxmi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. All the three deities inside Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai are decorated with nose rings, gold bangles and pearl necklaces. The shrine of Mahalaxmi is displayed as riding a tiger and Mahishasur (demon) together. The premises of the Mahalaxmi Temple are crowded with stalls selling flower garlands and religious paraphernalia for worship. The atmosphere in and around the temple is that of devotion and religiousness.

The Mahalaxmi Temple in Mumbai gets a look during the Navaratri festival which is one of the major festivals in the city. Navaratri in Mumbai is celebrated with a lot of fervor and enthusiasm. Worshippers come from distant places to the temple and stand for long hours to get a chance to pay their obeisance to the Goddesses. During the festival of Navaratri, the deities are adorned with gold ornaments.
